No casualty projections for Afghan war: Canadian Forces

OTTAWA - Over six years after the Canadian Forces were first sent to Afghanistan, the federal government maintains it has no estimate of how many more soldiers could die before the mission ends.

"Following a thorough and complete search, ... no records could be located with the Department of National Defence that would provide projections for casualty figures," the department said in response to an access to information request.

Defence experts frankly doubt that's the case.

"If you're taking on a military deployment, one of the first questions you would ask is 'What are the risks of casualties'?' " says Steven Staples, director of the Rideau Institute on International Affairs.

Would someone please explain to me why we are sending Canadian soldiers half way around the world to fight and die to support a regime of warlords who systematically trash the rights of women in a country where the main export is opium?
