One car gets 46 miles per gallon, features fancy accessories, and sports two engines with a combined 145 horsepower. The other car reportedly gets 54 miles per gallon, runs on a diminutive 30-horsepower engine, and is positively spartan in its interior trimmings. The first is a darling of the environmentally conscious. The latter is reviled as a climate wrecker. Comment: There is more than a little hypocrisy over the analysis of the introduction of this high mileage, low cost Indian car. It may result in cleaner air initially in third world cities. The object though is not to reproduce the profligate energy consumption that is the hallmark of North American transportation.
We simply have to develop new transportation policies and design our cities so that mass transportation systems and low energy alternate transportation can be effective and flourish.

Now is the time to invest in public transportation and to develop new green technology in that sector.
In Canada -- where close to 80% of us live in cities -- there is no excuse for delaying that investment.
